Cooling water filtration in pipe and profile extrusion

From the cooling bath to spray nozzles, from the heat exchanger to the chiller: filtration engineering that determines dimensional stability and pump life on the extrusion line.

Critical points

Points where filtration is decisive in pipe and profile processes

In pipe and profile extrusion, the cooling bath and spray systems are among the most critical points of the process. Plastic dust, scale and biological contaminants in cooling water clog nozzles, cause fouling in heat exchangers and wear out pumps.

Cooling Water Filtration on Extrusion Lines

On pipe and profile extrusion lines, the cooling bath and spray systems are among the most critical points in the process. The water circulating in these systems carries plastic dust, scale (CaCO₃) and biological contaminants. Unfiltered cooling water eventually clogs spray nozzles, causes fouling in heat exchangers and seriously damages pump mechanics. Keeping total suspended solids (TSS) in cooling water below 50 mg/L ensures uniform cooling and eliminates the risk of ovality and warping in pipes. The main risks of unfiltered water are as follows: spray nozzle clogging from scale and plastic dust leads to uneven cooling and therefore dimensional errors. Heat exchanger fouling from biofilm and scale significantly increases energy consumption. Abrasive particles cause pump wear and unplanned downtime, while iron oxide and deposits cause surface stains and therefore higher scrap rates.

Solution: Staged cooling water filtration

Where and at What Rating Should Filtration Be Applied?

Different points on the extrusion line have different filtration needs. Bag filters or basket filters in the 200–500 µm range are preferred on the cooling water inlet line. Melt-blown cartridge filters for 50–100 µm are ideal before the spray nozzles, and 25–50 µm pleated micro cartridge filters at the heat exchanger inlet. Stainless steel basket filters in the 50–200 µm range are used to protect pumps and chillers, while on lines running 24/7, a self-cleaning filter housing rated 25–200 µm is the most efficient solution. For cooling water, the recommended targets are TSS below 50 mg/L, hardness below 200 mg/L CaCO₃, pH between 6.5 and 8.5, and temperature between 15 and 25 °C. System design references ISO 9001:2015, EN 12201, DIN 8061/8062 and TEMA (fouling factors) standards.

Select a stage on your line to see the Prosestim filters and micron range used at that point.

01 · 200–500 µm

Capture the coarse load at the start of the line

Bag filters or basket filters in the 200–500 µm range are preferred on the cooling water inlet line.

02 · 50–100 µm

Uniform cooling, no more ovality

A 50–100 µm melt-blown cartridge filter before the spray nozzles prevents nozzle clogging.

03 · 25–50 µm

Prevent fouling

A 25–50 µm pleated micro cartridge filter is ideal at the heat exchanger inlet.

04 · 50–200 µm

Protection against abrasion

A 50–200 µm stainless steel basket filter is used to protect pumps and chillers.

05 · 25–200 µm

Cleaning without downtime

On lines that run continuously, a self-cleaning filter housing rated 25–200 µm is the most efficient solution.
