What Is a Multifilament Cotton Bag Filter?
Multifilament cotton bag filters are a natural-fibre liquid filtration medium made by processing yarn, formed by twisting many fine cotton fibres, on precision looms. Unlike synthetic multifilament alternatives (polyester, polypropylene, nylon), cotton is made from a natural, additive-free raw material. The high tensile strength and flexibility of the multifilament structure, combined with the advantages of natural cotton fibre, provide reliable surface filtration across a wide range of applications.
The most notable feature of multifilament cotton bag filters compared with synthetic alternatives is the lipophilic (oil-loving) structure of natural cotton fibre; this provides additional oil absorption during mechanical filtration of oil-containing process liquids. Their silicone-free, additive-free natural raw material allows them to be used safely on food, beverage and sensitive process lines. However, the risk of biodegradation during wet standing and storage must be considered.

Collar Types and Adapters

PP Ring (Plastic Ring)
Polypropylene ring, stitched or welded. Used where full chemical resistance is required.

Snap Ring (Steel Ring)
Galvanised or stainless steel ring. The most widely used, economical standard collar.

Drawstring
Can be tied manually to any pipe outlet or special hanger with the drawstring.

Flange Top (Plastic Flange)
The plastic collar gives maximum sealing. Ideal for high-pressure systems.

Plain Top
Has no ring; suitable for machines with a special clamping device.

Snap Band
The flexible steel band clicks into its seat. Allows fast change-outs.
Advantages of the Multifilament Cotton Bag Filter
- Naturally Lipophilic Structure
- Thanks to the structural properties of natural cotton fibre, non-emulsified free oil particles are partially absorbed during mechanical filtration; an extra advantage in oil-containing processes.
- High Strength and Flexibility
- The multi-yarn multifilament structure gives higher tensile strength and flexibility than single-yarn alternatives; long-lasting use under demanding operating conditions.
- Silicone-Free Natural Structure
- Natural raw material free of silicone and contaminating additives; can be used safely on food, beverage and sensitive process lines.
- Dirt-Holding Capacity
- The spaces between the filaments of the multifilament structure provide higher dirt-holding capacity than monofilament.
- Wide Micron Range
- Wide micron options from 75 to 1,500 µm, adaptable to different coarse filtration needs.
- Cost-Effective
- An economical cost structure compared with synthetic alternatives; offers the advantage of natural fibre at low cost.

Multifilament Cotton Bag Filter
Your Questions Answered
Frequently Asked Questions
At Prosestim, we are committed to answering your questions and providing technical support for our filtration solutions.
What is a multifilament cotton bag filter?
How does it differ from polyester multifilament?
What is the maximum temperature it can withstand?
How does it retain oil?
Can it be used in humid environments?
Yes. A cotton bag filter works normally in liquid filtration. However, leaving it wet in the housing during line stoppages or storing it in a humid environment creates a risk of biodegradation from bacteria and rot. To guard against this risk, remove the bag from the housing during long stoppages and store it in a dry place.
Can it be used in food applications?
Yes. The silicone-free, additive-free natural cotton construction can be used safely in food and beverage applications.
Do you manufacture custom sizes?
Yes, custom production is available in non-standard size and micron combinations.
